New York Public Library

A temple to reading
permeated by the musty smell of books
only at night is it truly quiet
a cavernous space filled with silent readers
where footfalls echo
chairs sigh and fart
shoes squeak
keys jangle
books drop
and the building breathes

My neighbor wears earplugs

Better read on the subway
where the noise is constant
